De stad Maastricht staat bekend om haar ambitie een internationale status te handhaven, als zijnde een mooie, historische, eigentijdse en opwindende stad waar mensen graag leven, studeren, werken en op bezoek komen. Maastricht trekt mensen van over heel de wereld en is in de voorbije twintig jaar geleidelijk aan veranderd in een kloppend hart voor belangrijke evenementen. Of het om politieke betekenis gaat, gericht is op onschuldig vermaak of bedoeld is om het in stand houden van een gunstig en winstgevend economisch klimaat, de stad zet haar poorten wagenwijd open.

The city of Maastricht is known for its ambition to uphold an international status as a beautiful, historical, contemporary and exciting town where people like to live, study, work and visit. Maastricht attracts visitors from all over the world and in the past twenty years, it gradually grew into a center where major and important events take place, whether they're of political value, focused on innocent entertainment and leisure time or based on the efforts to do business and keep economy flowing.

Temidden van dit alles slagen mensen er in om nieuwe initiatieven van de grond te krijgen, zoals De Muziekgieterij, gevestigd in het voormalig onderkomen van de regionale radio- en televisie omroep L1. Het is een gemeenschap voor muziek en cultuur, voor jonge aanstormende talenten, maar ook voor de ervaren en gerijpte muzikant en podiumkunstenaar, voor hen die nieuwe horizonten willen verkennen of behept zijn met een eclectische interesse en open geest. Een ideale achtergrond dus voor het Lollo Meier Quartet om er het nieuwe album "Rosas" te presenteren.

Amidst all of this, people find ways to build communities much needed, such as De Muziekgieterij, located in the former building of the regional radio and television network L1. It's a community for music and culture, for the young and restless, the wise, the curious, the eclectic and open minded. A perfect place for the Lollo Meier Quartet to celebrate the release of their new CD "Rosas" and present themselves to a willing and eager audience.

Violist Tcha Limberger wierp zich kundig op als gastheer en kondigde onderhoudend de nummers aan, verzekerd van een gewillig publiek dat onmiddellijk gecharmeerd was door deze blinde multi-instrumentalist uit Brugge. Lollo's eigen composities en enkele geliefde en bekende jazz standards blonken uit door de virtuoze vertolking van de vier musici die elk op uitmuntende wijze hun instrument beheersen. Lollo's gave voor lyrische melodieën werd gedragen door een gedegen ritme sectie: Andy Crowdy op contrabas en Dave Kelbie op gitaar. Tcha Limberger voegde een extra dimensie aan de muziek, om hem te zien en te horen is een ware openbaring!

Violinist Tcha Limberger took it upon himself to host the concert and introduced the songs in a charmingly and often humorful way. Lollo's compositions and the (gypsy) jazz standards excelled due to the quartet's virtuous performance, each of these four musicians truly master their instrument: Lollo's gift for lyrical melodies were carried by an outstanding rhythm section, Andy Crowdy on double bass and Dave Kelbie on rhythm guitar. Tcha Limberger added an extra dimension to the music, to hear and watch him play his violin is a real treat!

Melodieën van nummers als "I Love You", "Blue Skies", "Dinette" en de titelsong "Rosas" laten je niet meer los, zo ook het krachtige ritme van "Brazil" dat door het Lollo Meier Quartet een heel eigen sfeer kreeg.

Songs like "I Love You", "Step Swing", "Blue Skies", "Dinette" and the title track "Rosas", their melodies linger on, so does the powerful swing in "Brazil", the Lollo Meier Quartet highlights another side of this popular Brazilian tune, written in 1939 by Ary Barroso and Brazil's most popular song before the bossa nova era.

Tcha Limberger is bijzonder. Hij is niet slechts een begenadigd violist (hij speelt zestig instrumenten in totaal) met een talent als stand-up comedian, hij heeft bovendien een prachtig ingetogen stem waarmee hij met "I Surrender Dear" beelden opriep van lang vervlogen tijden, de jaren 30, 40 en 50. De romantiek, de lyriek en de schoonheid uit die decennia kwam weer tot leven in De Muziekgieterij.

Tcha Limberger is special. He isn't just a gifted violinist with a talent for stand up comedy, he's also a wonderful vocalist who delivered "I Surrender Dear" with so much conviction you could easily picture yourself in those long gone eras of the 30s, 40s and 50s. The romance, the lyricism and the beauty of those years came to life again, this very evening in De Muziekgieterij.

Lollo's muziek is gebaseerd op bekende ritmes die de zigeunerjazz wereldwijde faam opleverden dankzij Django Reinhardt. Maar er waren deze avond momenten die de muziek naar een hoger vlak tilden, van die unieke ervaringen die helaas niet voor herhaling vatbaar zijn. Bassist Andy genoot met zichtbare teugen en gitarist Andy bewees zichzelf een ideale partner in het emsemble dat de "Lollo" sound met veel esprit de ether in stuurde. Ze zullen de nummers wel duizenden keren gespeeld hebben, toch kon je op momenten pure magie van dichtbij beleven: Tcha's scat zang en vioolsoli, Lollo's vederlichte en vliegensvlugge nauwkeurigheid samen met een standvastige schijnbare nonchalance van bassist Andy en gitarist Dave's ritmische verstilling.

Although Lollo's gypsy jazz is based on familiar rhythms and grooves the Gypsy music is famous for, there were moments when the music seemed to transcend itself onto higher planes, the "one of a kind" kind of moment that never repeats itself again. Bassist Andy had a real good time, it showed in his smiles and guitarist Dave proved himself an ideal partner to complete the "Lollo sound" we experienced this night. They must have played this music a zillion times before, but one could still sense the electricity at times, when either Tcha's perfectly pitched scat singing and violin, or Lollo's feather-light accuracy met the steady ease of Andy's basslines and Dave's rhythmic quietude.

If you check the video section, you can see snippets from the concert. These were filmed with a photo camera and are of poor quality, but one can at least taste a glimpse of the evening anyway. I haven't figured out how to edit the avi files yet, or whether my computer is equipped with the appropriate software, but I will do my best to find out how I can show Tcha Limberger standing up, instead of horizontal, because I had rotated my camera.
